
Why Blended Jumpers Bobble More Than Pure Wool
All knitwear bobbles. Blends look worse because a strong synthetic fibre holds each bobble on, so it stays where a pure wool bobble would have worked loose and fallen off unnoticed.
A bobble forms on every knit, but only some knits keep it. Polyester, nylon and acrylic fibres are far stronger than wool or cotton, so when a bobble forms on a blend the anchoring fibre does not break — and the jumper collects what a pure wool one would shed.
Why do blended jumpers bobble more than pure wool?
Not because they shed more. Because they hold on to what they shed.
A bobble is a small tangle of short fibre ends that have worked out of the yarn under abrasion and rolled into a ball. It stays attached by a few longer fibres running back into the knit, and whether it survives depends entirely on the strength of those anchors.
On pure wool or pure cotton the anchors are wool or cotton — weak, and easily broken by the next 20 minutes of wear. The bobble forms, detaches and disappears, usually without you ever seeing it. On a wool-polyester or wool-acrylic blend, some anchors are synthetic. Polyester has several times the tensile strength of wool. It does not break. The bobble stays, more form around it, and 6 months later the jumper looks tired while a pure wool one bought the same day does not.
The blend is not shedding more. It is simply keeping the evidence.
Which blends bobble worst?
Those mixing a short, soft natural fibre with a strong synthetic. Wool or cotton with polyester, nylon or acrylic is the classic offender, worst in the 20% to 50% synthetic range — enough synthetic to anchor, enough natural fibre to supply the loose ends. A fully synthetic jumper bobbles less visibly because less short fibre works loose to begin with.
Where does bobbling appear first?
Wherever 2 surfaces rub, which maps neatly onto how you move:
- Under the arms and along the sides — arm against body, every step you take.
- The cuffs and forearms — desk edges, sleeves pushed up, jacket linings.
- The shoulder and hip on your carrying side — wherever a bag strap sits. This is why bobbling is often asymmetric.
- The seat and lower back, if you wear the jumper sitting down for most of the day.

Does bobbling mean a jumper is cheap?
A weaker signal than people think. Fibre length matters far more than price: long-staple wool holds its fibres in the yarn and resists bobbling, short-staple wool sheds ends readily, and plenty of expensive knitwear uses short-staple fibre because it feels softer in the shop.
Cashmere is the clearest case — among the most expensive fibres available and among the shortest, which is exactly why a good cashmere jumper bobbles in its first season. That is normal, not a defect.
Most knitwear bobbles hardest during the first few wears and then settles down. The loose fibre ends present in the yarn from manufacture come out early. Once they are gone, the rate drops sharply — so the jumper you nearly returned in week 2 is often fine by week 10.
Can you get bobbles off a jumper?
Yes, and it is maintenance rather than damage. A battery fabric shaver cuts the bobbles off at the surface without pulling the anchoring fibres out of the knit, which is exactly what you want.
- Lay the garment flat on a hard surface. Never shave it while wearing or hanging it — the fabric stretches and the blade catches the knit.
- Work in small sections, moving the shaver in a single direction with light pressure.
- Do the friction points first, then stop. Chasing every last bobble is how people go through a garment.
- Empty the collection chamber as you go — a full chamber makes the blade drag.
A disposable razor works in an emergency and is risky on fine knit. A sweater stone suits chunky wool and is too aggressive for merino or cashmere.
How do you slow bobbling down?
Reduce the abrasion. Wash inside out on a gentle cycle in a drum with room to tumble, and keep denim and towels out of that load — a zip and a heavy cotton weave do more damage in 1 wash than a week of wearing. Resting a knit between wears helps too.
When is a bobbled jumper past saving?
When the fabric under the bobbles has thinned. Hold the friction point up to a window: if light comes through the weave, the yarn has lost material rather than simply raised it, and shaving will finish what the abrasion started. At that stage a fabric shaver is not a repair — it is the last step before a hole.
Bobbling on a jumper that is still thick and opaque is entirely fixable. Bobbling on one already sheer at the elbows is a jumper telling you it is worn out.
Honestly, not much. Bobbling is mechanical, not chemical — no detergent or conditioner prevents it, ours included, and anything sold on that promise is worth a second look.
