
Old and Set-In Stains: What Is Still Rescuable
Every stain guide assumes you found it in the first 5 minutes. This one is for the shirt that has been folded in a drawer since March — where the question is not how to treat it, but whether it is worth treating at all.
Most old stains are still treatable. What decides the odds is the stain type and what happened afterwards. Heat and time make a stain permanent, so anything already through a hot dryer is the hard case. Dye damage does not come back.
What actually happened while it sat there
A fresh stain is a substance resting on and between fibres. An old stain is that substance chemically changed — oxidised by air, cross-linked by heat, or bonded to the fibre by a reaction that was slow but never stopped. That is the whole difference, and it explains why the same treatment that works instantly on Tuesday does nothing in September.
What does set-in actually mean?
It means the stain is no longer sitting in the fabric — it is part of it. Protein has coagulated. Oil has oxidised into a hardened yellow-brown film. Tannin has bonded to cellulose. Each of those is a different problem with a different answer, which is why a single all-purpose stain remover so often fails on old marks.
Which stains get worse with time and which do not?

The order of treatment
On an old stain the sequence does more work than the product. Start cool, start weak, and escalate only when the gentler stage has failed — because every escalation risks the fabric, and a hole is a worse outcome than a mark.
How do you get an old stain out of clothes?
- Identify what it was, or work it out from the colour and the feel. Everything after this depends on it.
- Rehydrate: soak in cool water for 1 hour to soften the deposit.
- Treat by class — a solvent or washing-up liquid for oil, a biological detergent for protein, an oxygen-based product for tannin.
- Wash at the highest temperature the care label allows.
- Air dry and inspect in daylight. Repeat before any heat touches it.
How many times is it worth repeating?
3 full cycles. If a stain has not visibly moved after 3 properly executed attempts, further attempts are usually damaging the fibre rather than lifting the mark. Knowing when to stop is part of the skill.
Biological detergents work by breaking down protein, and wool, silk and cashmere are protein fibres. Never use an enzyme detergent or an oxygen booster on those 3 — take them to a dedicated wool wash, or to a specialist. This applies to every biological detergent, ours included.
What cannot be saved
Can you remove a stain that has been through the dryer?
Sometimes, and it is always the hardest version of the job. Dryer heat is what converts a treatable deposit into a cured one. Try the full sequence twice, and accept the answer the second attempt gives you.
What is dye damage and why is it different?
If bleach, an acid or strong sunlight has stripped colour out of the fabric, there is no stain left to remove — the fibre is simply a different colour now. No product returns it. The realistic options are dyeing the garment, a decorative repair, or retiring it.
The skill is not removing every stain. It is knowing which 2 out of 10 are worth the afternoon.
Preventing the next one
Does rinsing in cold water really help?
It is the highest-value 30 seconds in laundry. Cold water dilutes and carries away most of a fresh deposit before any reaction begins, and it costs nothing. Hot water on an unknown stain does the opposite — it sets protein instantly.
What should you check before drying?
- Inspect wet garments in daylight, not under a kitchen light.
- Air dry anything that came out marked, then re-treat.
- Keep 1 bottle of washing-up liquid near the machine for oil.
- Wash the load again rather than drying it 'to see'.
