
Why a Half-Empty Washing Machine Cleans Worse
A half-empty washing machine cleans worse than a properly filled one. Clothes are cleaned by rubbing against each other, and a nearly empty drum holds so much free water that the load floats instead of rubbing.
Below roughly 50% full, a drum stops cleaning properly. Mechanical action — fabric dragging across fabric — does most of the work, and it needs the garments to be in contact. Fill the drum until you can lay a flat hand between the load and the roof of it.
What actually does the cleaning in a washing machine?
Detergent chemistry, temperature, the time the cycle runs, and mechanical action. The first 3 get all the attention. Mechanical action does more of the work than most people expect, and it is the only part of the wash you change by how you load the machine.
Mechanical action is the physical part. The drum lifts a garment up the side, gravity drops it onto the ones below, and the impact drives water and detergent through the weave while fabric drags across fabric. That drag is the scrubbing. It is what releases body oil and lifts particulate soil out of the fibre rather than merely wetting it.
A washing machine is not a soaking tub with a motor attached. It is a machine for making clothes rub against each other in soapy water, repeatedly, for 30 minutes or more.
Why does too much water make a wash worse?
Because water is the medium, not the mechanism. Put 3 shirts in a drum and the machine still draws a sensible fill of water for the cycle you selected. The ratio of water to fabric goes up sharply, and the shirts end up suspended rather than stacked.
Suspended fabric glides. It slides past its neighbours and cushions on the water instead of pressing into it, so the tumble that should be a drop becomes a slosh. Nothing rubs. The load comes out wet, rinsed and only lightly cleaned — which is fine for a shirt worn once to a desk, and poor for a gym top that has been worn to failure.
Most people load a machine lightly because it feels gentler. It is gentler. That is the problem: gentleness and cleaning are the same variable pulling in opposite directions, and a wash that is easy on the garment is also easy on the soil.
How full should the drum be?
Fill it until you can lay a flat hand, palm down, in the gap between the top of the load and the roof of the drum. That is roughly 3/4 full, and it is the only measurement worth memorising.
Better still, use the behaviour rather than the measurement. Watch the drum turn for 10 seconds after the cycle starts:

Fall, not slide, not swim. It takes 10 seconds to check and it tells you more than any dial setting.
What happens when the drum is packed?
The opposite mistake with the same outcome. A packed drum cannot tumble at all — the load rotates as a single block, so the garments in the middle never reach water that has anything left in it, and the rinse struggles to clear what did dissolve. Underfilling and overfilling are 2 routes to the same destination.
A washing machine cleans clothes with other clothes. Take them away and you have taken away the tool.
Does more detergent make up for a light load?
No, and it makes things marginally worse. Excess detergent produces suds, and suds cushion in exactly the way excess water does — a foamed drum is a drum where the fabric has something soft to land on. Chemistry cannot buy back mechanical action.
When is a small load the right call?
Often, and this is the limitation on everything above. There are loads where you should accept worse cleaning on purpose:
- New dark denim for the first few washes, while the dye is still bleeding.
- A single heavily soiled item you would rather not press against everything else for 40 minutes.
- Wool, cashmere and silk, where mechanical action is the thing you are trying to avoid — felting is caused by agitation, not by heat alone.
- Anything the care label says to wash separately. The label is a constraint, not a suggestion.
In those cases run the small load deliberately, on a shorter and cooler cycle, and accept that it is a rinse with intent rather than a deep clean. The mistake is not the small load. The mistake is the half-empty drum you loaded without thinking, expecting a full result.
