
Deodorant Marks and Yellowing: The Antiperspirant Reaction, Not Sweat
The stiff yellow crust under the arm of a white shirt is not sweat. It is the aluminium in your antiperspirant, bound to the protein in your sweat and then baked in by heat — which is why washing harder has never once fixed it.
Underarm yellowing is aluminium salts from antiperspirant bound to protein in sweat, then set by heat. Treat it as 2 stains: an acid to release the aluminium, enzymes to break the protein. Never tumble dry it first.
Why white shirts go yellow and black shirts go white
Antiperspirant and deodorant are different products doing different jobs. Deodorant masks odour. Antiperspirant blocks the sweat duct, and it does that with aluminium salts — aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium. Almost every stain problem under the arm traces back to those salts rather than to sweat itself.
Is underarm yellowing actually caused by sweat?
Not on its own. Fresh sweat is mostly water, salt and a small quantity of protein, and it washes out. What does not wash out is the compound that forms when aluminium salts meet that protein and sit in the fabric across a working day. The result is a bond that ordinary surfactants cannot lift, sitting exactly where the fabric is warmest.
Why do dark shirts get white marks instead?
Same chemistry, opposite optics. On a black t-shirt the aluminium deposit dries as a pale chalky residue and a stiff patch you can feel with a thumbnail. It is the identical build-up, and it responds to the identical treatment.
The order that works
Because there are 2 different substances in the same patch, the sequence matters more than the products do. Acid first, enzymes second, heat last or not at all.
How do you remove deodorant stains from a shirt?
- Soak the underarm area in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts cool water for 30 minutes. The acid loosens the aluminium deposit.
- Rinse, then work a biological detergent solution into the patch and leave it for another 30 minutes. Enzymes break down the protein half.
- Wash at 40°C on a normal cycle.
- Air dry and inspect in daylight. If a shadow remains, repeat before it goes anywhere near a dryer.
Does white vinegar really remove deodorant marks?
For the mineral half, yes, and it is the cheapest thing that does. What it will not do is touch the protein half, which is why vinegar alone leaves a shirt that looks better and still smells faintly of a gym bag when it warms up. The 2 steps are not alternatives.
What temperature should you wash at?
40°C. Cold leaves the residue behind; anything above 40°C risks setting whatever the pre-treatment did not lift. If the care label says 30°C, follow it and lengthen the pre-treatment instead.
Biological detergents break down protein, and wool, silk and cashmere are protein fibres. Do not use an enzyme detergent on those 3 — use a dedicated wool wash. This is true of every biological detergent, ours included.
What makes it permanent
Why does the tumble dryer set the stain?
A dryer runs hot enough to drive the remaining moisture out of the deposit and cure what is left into the weave. A stain that would have taken 2 treatments before the dryer may take 6 afterwards, and some never come back at all. Inspect before drying, every time, on any garment you care about.
Can you rescue a shirt that has already yellowed?
Often, if the fibre is intact. Repeat the acid-then-enzyme cycle 2 or 3 times across separate washes rather than escalating to bleach, which weakens cotton and can turn aluminium residue a deeper yellow rather than removing it. What cannot be rescued is fabric that has actually thinned under the arm — at that point the shirt has worn out, not stained.
Nothing sets a stain like the machine you bought to save time.
Stopping it happening again
Does the deodorant you buy make a difference?
It is the single biggest lever. A deodorant without aluminium cannot leave an aluminium deposit. If you need the antiperspirant effect, apply it at night on dry skin, let it absorb fully, and use less than feels natural — the salts work at low concentration and the excess goes straight into the shirt.
Does washing shirts sooner help?
Yes, and it is free. The bond strengthens with time in the fabric, so a shirt washed the same evening gives up its residue easily and a shirt left in a basket for a week does not.
- Let antiperspirant dry completely before dressing.
- Wash worn shirts within 2 days rather than at the weekend.
- Check the underarm in daylight before drying.
- Keep whites out of a hot dryer entirely if you can.
