Why Towels Go Musty
A towel is the only thing in the house that is put away damp on purpose. That is the whole problem — and the smell it produces is not a sign the wash failed, but a sign of what happened in the 6 hours afterwards.
Musty towels come from moisture and residue together. Damp fabric plus detergent or softener build-up gives odour-causing microbes somewhere to live. Strip the residue out, wash warmer, and dry towels fast and fully.
Where the smell comes from
Fresh towels do not smell. The odour arrives when 3 conditions overlap: moisture that stays in the pile for hours, organic matter for microbes to feed on, and a temperature somewhere between warm and lukewarm. A folded damp towel on a heated rail provides all 3 at once.
Is a musty towel dirty?
Not in the way people assume. The towel came out of the machine clean. What it did not come out of the machine is empty — it carries a small amount of detergent residue, softener film, hard-water minerals and body oil, and that mixture is what microbial growth uses. The smell is the by-product, not the substance itself.
Why does the smell only appear when the towel gets wet?
This is the frustrating part. The compounds responsible are largely non-volatile when dry and become volatile again the moment water and body heat return. So a towel can smell perfectly fine folded on a shelf and unmistakably musty 10 seconds into being used.

Does washing at 30°C cause musty towels?
It contributes, on towels specifically. A cool wash suits most of a wardrobe, but towels hold body oil in a dense pile and a periodic 60°C wash removes far more of it. The pattern that works is ordinary washes at 40°C with a hotter wash every third or fourth time.
Why does the washing machine itself matter?
Because a machine that has been running cool washes for a year has its own film inside the drum, the door seal and the detergent drawer. If every load smells rather than just the towels, the machine is the source and no change of detergent will fix it.
Resetting towels that already smell
How do you get the musty smell out of towels?
- Wash them alone at 60°C with no detergent and no softener at all.
- Add an extra rinse to carry the loosened residue away.
- Repeat once if the smell survives.
- Dry them fully and quickly — a dryer, or a well-ventilated room, not a folded rail.
- Return to normal washing with a correct dose and softener used sparingly.
Does white vinegar work?
It helps with mineral and softener build-up, which is a real cause. Run half a cup in the drawer in place of softener for 1 wash. It is a useful reset rather than a routine addition, and it should never be combined with bleach.
The towel does not smell because the wash was too weak. It smells because the towel never fully dried.
Preventing it
How should a towel be hung?
Spread out across a rail or a hook wide enough to keep the faces apart, never folded in half over a narrow rail. A folded towel dries from the outside in and stays damp in the fold for hours, which is precisely where the smell starts.
What else prevents it?
- Ventilate the bathroom — open a window or run the fan for 20 minutes after a shower.
- Wash towels every 3 to 4 uses.
- Take towels out of the machine as soon as the cycle ends.
- Leave the machine door and the drawer open between washes.
Biological detergents break down protein, and wool, silk and cashmere are protein fibres. None of this applies to them — use a dedicated wool wash for those 3, and keep them out of a hot towel load.
Almost every musty towel we hear about traces back to dosing. A cap of liquid is a guess, and the excess has nowhere to go but into the pile, where it feeds the problem. 1 sheet, 1 load removes the guess entirely.
