What's in detergent, and what each part actually does
This is the part of the category with the most marketing and the least explanation. Below is what the ingredients actually do, what we put in ours, and how to get more out of every wash.
What's in detergent
What is actually in laundry detergent?
Four functional groups doing four different jobs. Surfactants lift oily soil off fibre. Enzymes break down specific soil classes. Builders and sequestrants deal with water hardness so the surfactants can work. Everything else — fragrance, optical brighteners, anti-redeposition agents, preservatives, and in liquids, a great deal of water. Cleaning is really the first three.
What do surfactants do?
They are the core of cleaning. A surfactant molecule has a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail, so it bridges two things that will not otherwise mix. The tail buries itself in oily soil, the head stays in the water, and the soil gets lifted off the fibre and held in suspension until it rinses away. Without surfactant, water just runs past grease.
What are enzymes and what do they each do?
Protease breaks down protein — blood, sweat, egg, dairy. Lipase splits fats and oils into fatty acids and glycerol so they rinse out instead of clinging. Amylase handles starch. Cellulase trims loose microfibrils off cotton, which reduces pilling and brightens colour. They are catalysts, so they need time and a workable temperature — which is why soaking often beats heating.
Are laundry enzymes plant-based?
No, and any brand claiming plant-derived enzymes is describing something that does not exist. Laundry enzymes are produced by fermentation — microorganisms, usually bacteria or fungi, grown in tanks and engineered to secrete the enzyme. They are not extracted from plants. They are not animal-derived either, which is why they are compatible with a vegan formulation.
What are builders and sequestrants?
Water-hardness management. Calcium and magnesium ions bind to anionic surfactant and form insoluble soap, consuming your detergent before it can clean. Sequestrants — chelating agents — lock those ions up so the surfactant survives. The size of a detergent's sequestrant package largely determines how well it copes with hard water, and it is the least-advertised, most-consequential thing in the box.
What are optical brighteners?
Fluorescent dyes that stay on fabric after washing and convert invisible UV into visible blue light. They do not clean anything — they make white fabric appear whiter by offsetting the yellow that fabric naturally develops. It is an optical trick, and a legitimate one, but it is cosmetics rather than cleaning.
What are phosphates, and do detergents still use them?
Phosphates were extremely effective builders — excellent at handling hard water — and they are now restricted in UK and EU domestic laundry detergent. Modern formulas use alternative sequestrants to do the same job. Element sheets are free from dyes and phosphates.
Why is there so much water in liquid detergent?
Because it is the cheapest way to make a concentrated product pourable, dosable and shelf-stable. It also means you pay to ship water, store water and dispose of the plastic bottle holding water. Removing the water is the entire premise of the sheet format — that is the trade, and the trade-off is a smaller mass budget for actives.
What are preservatives doing in detergent?
Stopping microbial growth in the bottle. Anything water-based and organic will grow things given time, so liquids need preservation. A dry sheet has no free water, so it needs far less preservative — one of the quieter advantages of the format.
What Element uses, and what we will not claim
Does Element contain dyes?
No. Our sheets are free from dyes — they are white. Dye does nothing for cleaning; it is there so a product looks the way customers expect a detergent to look.
Is Element's packaging recyclable?
Yes — the sheet box is 100% recyclable cardboard and goes in your kerbside recycling. There is no plastic bottle. Our fabric softener comes in a 1L bottle; check your local authority's guidance for that, as UK recycling varies by council more than it should.
Is Element vegan and cruelty-free?
Our enzymes are fermentation-derived rather than animal-derived, and we do not test on animals. We have not completed third-party certification for either, so we describe the position rather than display a logo we have not earned. If certification matters to you, that is a fair thing to hold us to and it is on our list.
Is Element tested on animals?
No. We do not test on animals and we do not ask anyone to do it for us.
Is Element made in the UK?
Element for Men is a British brand, based in the UK and shipping across the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We are a small company — you are not buying from a multinational with a heritage story bolted on.
What certifications does Element have?
Fewer than we would like, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. We hold safety documentation for our formulations, and our packaging claims are straightforward and verifiable. Third-party certification for vegan and cruelty-free status is work in progress, not something we can point at today.

On the product pages and on what's inside Element. We publish the list in full rather than summarising it, because a formula you cannot read is a formula you are being asked to take on trust.
Getting more out of every wash
Does washing at 30°C really make a difference?
Yes, on two counts. Heating water is where the electricity in a cycle goes, so dropping from 40°C to 30°C measurably cuts what a household year of washing costs to run. It is also easier on fabric, so colour and shape last longer. The honest limit is that 30°C will not shift heavy body oil, so sebum-loaded synthetics are the exception rather than the rule.
Does washing less often actually help?
Considerably — mostly for your clothes. Most garments are washed more than they need. Jeans, jumpers and jackets rarely need a cycle after one wear; airing does the job. Every wash you skip is wear the fabric does not take. Shirts, underwear and gym kit are the genuine every-wear items.
Does a fuller load use less energy?
Per garment, yes — a machine uses roughly similar energy regardless of load size, so half-loads waste it. But there is a ceiling: pack the drum and fabric cannot move, so it cleans and rinses badly and you end up rewashing. Three-quarters full is the point where efficiency and performance meet.
Is concentrated detergent better?
Directionally yes, for the obvious reasons — no water shipped, less packaging, less to store. The caveat is that concentration invites over-dosing, and over-dosing wastes product and leaves residue in fabric. Concentrated is better if you dose it correctly, which is the argument for pre-measured formats: one sheet, or half a sheet for a small load, with no cap to over-fill.
Should I use a water softener?
In a hard-water area it changes the arithmetic. Softened water means detergent is not consumed neutralising hardness, so you need less product for the same result, and limescale stops building in your machine and your clothes. Whether it justifies the install cost depends on your hardness — look up your postcode on your water company's site first.
