What's in detergent, and what the green claims mean

This is the part of the category with the most marketing and the least explanation. Below is what the ingredients actually do, and a straight account of which environmental claims hold up — including where ours stop.

What's in detergent

What is actually in laundry detergent?

Four functional groups doing four different jobs. Surfactants lift oily soil off fibre. Enzymes break down specific soil classes. Builders and sequestrants deal with water hardness so the surfactants can work. Everything else — fragrance, optical brighteners, anti-redeposition polymers, preservatives, and in liquids, a great deal of water. Cleaning is really the first three.

What do surfactants do?

They are the core of cleaning. A surfactant molecule has a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail, so it bridges two things that will not otherwise mix. The tail buries itself in oily soil, the head stays in the water, and the soil gets lifted off the fibre and held in suspension until it rinses away. Without surfactant, water just runs past grease.

What are enzymes and what do they each do?

Protease breaks down protein — blood, sweat, egg, dairy. Lipase splits fats and oils into fatty acids and glycerol so they rinse out instead of clinging. Amylase handles starch. Cellulase trims loose microfibrils off cotton, which reduces pilling and brightens colour. They are catalysts, so they need time and a workable temperature — which is why soaking often beats heating.

Are laundry enzymes plant-based?

No, and any brand claiming plant-derived enzymes is describing something that does not exist. Laundry enzymes are produced by fermentation — microorganisms, usually bacteria or fungi, grown in tanks and engineered to secrete the enzyme. They are not extracted from plants. They are not animal-derived either, which is why they are compatible with a vegan formulation.

What are builders and sequestrants?

Water-hardness management. Calcium and magnesium ions bind to anionic surfactant and form insoluble soap, consuming your detergent before it can clean. Sequestrants — chelating agents — lock those ions up so the surfactant survives. The size of a detergent's sequestrant package largely determines how well it copes with hard water, and it is the least-advertised, most-consequential thing in the box.

What are optical brighteners?

Fluorescent dyes that stay on fabric after washing and convert invisible UV into visible blue light. They do not clean anything — they make white fabric appear whiter by offsetting the yellow that fabric naturally develops. It is an optical trick, and a legitimate one, but it is cosmetics rather than cleaning.

What is PVA and is it a problem?

Polyvinyl alcohol — the water-soluble polymer that holds a detergent sheet or a pod film together. It is roughly 15–20% of a sheet by weight, ours included. It dissolves rather than fragmenting into particles, and it sits outside the EU legal definition of intentionally-added microplastics for that reason. It is also genuinely contested: advocacy groups argue that dissolution is not the same as biodegradation and that treatment plants may not fully break it down. We think the honest answer is to name it and let you judge.

What are phosphates and why were they banned?

Phosphates were extremely effective builders — excellent at handling hard water. They were restricted across the EU and UK because phosphate entering watercourses causes eutrophication: algal blooms that strip oxygen and kill aquatic life. Modern detergents use alternative sequestrants instead. Ours are phosphate-free.

Why is there so much water in liquid detergent?

Because it is the cheapest way to make a concentrated product pourable, dosable and shelf-stable. It also means you pay to ship water, store water and dispose of the plastic bottle holding water. Removing the water is the entire premise of the sheet format — that is the trade, and the trade-off is a smaller mass budget for actives.

What are preservatives doing in detergent?

Stopping microbial growth in the bottle. Anything water-based and organic will grow things given time, so liquids need preservation. A dry sheet has no free water, so it needs far less preservative — one of the quieter advantages of the format.

Environmental claims

Is laundry detergent bad for the environment?

The impacts are real and they are not where most people assume. The big ones are the energy your machine uses to heat water, the plastic packaging, the freight of shipping water around the country, and what goes down the drain. The detergent chemistry itself is a smaller share than the heating. Washing at 30°C where it works does more good than switching brand.

Are detergent sheets eco-friendly?

On packaging and transport, the case is strong and easy to verify — no plastic bottle, recyclable cardboard, and a fraction of the weight and volume to ship because there is no water. On the full life-cycle picture, including the PVA question and the ingredients, it is less settled, and anyone giving you a clean answer is overselling. We will make the packaging and freight case; we will not claim the whole footprint.

What does biodegradable actually mean?

Less than most packs imply. It means microorganisms can break the material down — but the claim is meaningless without conditions and a timeframe. Biodegradable under industrial composting is not biodegradable in a river. The standard tests are the OECD 301 series, and a claim worth trusting names the test and the result rather than just the word.

Is Element plastic-free?

The packaging is — recyclable cardboard, no plastic bottle. The sheet is not, and we will not say otherwise: it contains PVA. Brands claiming plastic-free sheets have been ruled against by the ASA, and rightly. We would rather tell you where the plastic is than earn a badge we do not deserve.

Is Element microplastic-free?

Microplastic-free under the EU definition — and the qualifier is not decoration, it is the claim. Water-soluble polymers such as PVA fall outside the EU legal definition of intentionally-added microplastics, which is the basis on which the qualified statement stands. Drop the qualifier and it becomes a claim we could not defend.

Is Element's packaging recyclable?

Yes — the cardboard box is 100% recyclable and goes in your kerbside recycling. Our fabric softener comes in a 1L bottle; check your local authority's guidance for that, as UK recycling varies by council more than it should.

Does Element contain dyes?

No. Our sheets are free from dyes — they are white. Dye does nothing for cleaning; it is there so a product looks the way customers expect a detergent to look.

Is Element hypoallergenic?

No, and we will not claim it. Our fragrances contain EU-declarable allergens, and one of our scents carries a skin-sensitisation classification. Fragrance is central to what we make, and a fragranced product is not the right choice for everyone. If you have a known fragrance sensitivity, that is worth taking seriously, and an unfragranced specialist product is likely a better fit than us.

Is Element vegan and cruelty-free?

Our enzymes are fermentation-derived rather than animal-derived, and we do not test on animals. We have not completed third-party certification for either, so we describe the position rather than display a logo we have not earned. If certification matters to you, that is a fair thing to hold us to and it is on our list.

Is Element made in the UK?

Element for Men is a British brand, based in the UK and shipping across the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We are a small company — you are not buying from a multinational with a heritage story bolted on.

What certifications does Element have?

Fewer than we would like, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. We hold safety documentation for our formulations, and our packaging claims are straightforward and verifiable. Third-party certification for vegan status, cruelty-free status and biodegradability is work in progress, not something we can point at today.

Is Element tested on animals?

No. We do not test on animals and we do not ask anyone to do it for us.

Doing laundry more sustainably

What is the single most effective thing I can do?

Wash at 30°C where it works and stop tumble drying. Heating water and running a dryer are the overwhelming share of laundry's energy footprint — far more than the detergent. The caveat is that 30°C fails on sebum-heavy synthetics, so make that load the exception rather than abandoning the default.

Does washing at 30°C really save much?

Yes — heating water is where the energy goes, and going from 40°C to 30°C is a meaningful reduction per cycle across a household year. It is also gentler on fabric, so clothes last longer, which is its own footprint saving. The honest limit is that it will not shift body oil.

Does washing less often actually help?

Considerably — and it helps your clothes too. Most garments are washed more than they need. Jeans, jumpers and jackets rarely need a cycle after one wear; airing does the job. Every wash you skip is water, energy, detergent and fibre wear avoided. Shirts, underwear and gym kit are the genuine every-wear items.

Are microfibres from clothes a real problem?

Yes, and it is a bigger issue than detergent chemistry. Synthetic garments shed plastic microfibres every wash and they pass through treatment into watercourses. A filter bag or an in-line machine filter catches a meaningful share. Washing less, washing gentler and buying fewer synthetics all reduce shedding — this is a fabric problem, not a detergent problem.

Does a fuller load use less energy?

Per garment, yes — a machine uses roughly similar energy regardless of load size, so half-loads waste it. But there is a ceiling: pack the drum and fabric cannot move, so it cleans and rinses badly and you end up rewashing. Three-quarters full is the point where efficiency and performance meet.

Is concentrated detergent better for the environment?

Directionally yes, for the obvious reason — less water shipped, less packaging, less freight. The caveat is that concentration invites over-dosing, and over-dosing wastes product and leaves residue. Concentrated is better if you dose it correctly, which is an argument for pre-measured formats.

Should I use a water softener?

In a hard-water area it changes the arithmetic. Softened water means detergent is not consumed neutralising hardness, so you need less product for the same result, and limescale stops building in your machine and your clothes. Whether it justifies the install cost depends on your hardness — look up your postcode on your water company's site first.
